Here are some photos of the Engineers Without Borders - Hope College team as they work to get clean water in Bondo, Kenya. They have been working on the rainwater catchment system for the church/school compound and have been making a lot of progress! For the system, they had to excavate for the foundation then lay rebar and then hand-mix and pour the concrete. They are now moving on to prepping the building for gutters while they wait for the concrete to cure.

Engineers Without Borders- Hope College Thanks You!!

March 31, 2017

As our project comes to a close I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting us through this journey! Without your generous support we would never have had the opportunity to bring water to this community. This project has taught us how to use our engineering skills we have learned in the classroom to solve real world problems through project design, drafting, and prototype production. Our project has also taught us how to care for our fellow brothers and sisters. This small community in Kenya has been struggling to find water for themselves for many years now, but thanks to you we will be able to travel to the community to work towards bringing them water.

The Engineers Without Borders- Hope College Chapter thanks you again for all of your support.

If you selected a perk when you made your donation, check your mailbox soon as we will begin to package them up and send them your way!

Only Four More Days Left!!

March 27, 2017

There are just 4 days left until our crowdfunding project comes to a close. We are so close to our goal! Can you help us finish strong by sharing our project with your family and friends? Remember, sharing is easy; just head to our crowdfunding page and click on any or all of the share buttons underneath the video! We appreciate all the support that you have given us, we couldn’t have done any of this without you!

World Water Day: Let's Celebrate!

March 22, 2017

Today is World Water Day! According to the United Nations, there are 1.8 billion people who use a source of drinking water that is contaminated. The people of Bondo, Kenya are among those numbers. By helping us to bring the groundwater well and the rainwater catchment system to Bondo you are taking action to put an end to this crisis. Nobody should have to walk 2 hours every day for clean water and by supporting our work you ensure that this community will no longer be contributing to these numbers.

Let’s work towards reducing the 1.8 billion to zero! Please share our page with friends and family to help make this a reality. We appreciate all of your support!

Meet Our Travel Team!

March 09, 2017

These students make up the travel team that will be heading to Bondo, Kenya this summer. We are forever grateful that you were able to supply us with all the support that we need to bring water to the community of Bondo! These students are all very excited to be able to put what they have been working on into action, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

The travel team will continue to work toward finalizing all of the plans including constructing the mock-up rainwater catchment system. If you are able, please continue to share our story with your friends and family. While we have enough funds to travel to Kenya, we still haven’t met our fundraising goal. Any funds that are raised past what we need to travel will go towards future travel and any emergency problems that we run into while we are in Kenya. The more funds we are able to raise, the more we can do.

Thank you again for all of your support! We appreciate every donation, no matter the size.

Have You Looked at Our Crowdfunding Page Lately?

February 23, 2017

We have made it over 75% of the way there and have extended our project until March 31st to ensure that we make it the rest of the way to our goal!

We are completing the final steps in the document submittal process to the Engineers Without Borders organization. Once we hear back from headquarters we will have the opportunity to perfect our project using their suggested edits. After that, the travel team will start the construction of the rainwater catchment system mock-up. Constructing this system while we are in the United States will ensure that we are prepared when we are in Bondo. The rainwater catchment system that we are planning on constructing has never been done before by our chapter or any other chapter that we have communicated with so we want to be sure that we fully understand the system before we build it over seas.

Thank you again for all of your support and encouragement! We are excited to have made it this far and can’t wait to see what we have ahead of us!

Please continue to spread the word about our project to your friends and family!

The Travel Team is Getting Ready!

We Are Halfway There!

February 02, 2017

Thanks to you, we have raised over half of our $30,000 goal. We couldn’t have done any of this without you and are excited to see what the future holds for the students and the community members of Bondo, Kenya.

But before we can finalize the travel plans we need to raise the additional $14,000 to ensure we will be able to pay for the supplies and equipment. We would appreciate it if you could take just a couple minutes out of your day to share our story with your friends and family. This is as easy as visiting our crowdfunding page and clicking on any of the social media buttons or telling your co-workers about the project you are helping fund!

Any donation helps, no matter the size!

Thank you again for all of your support! We couldn't do any of this if it wasn't for your generosity.

Give Water, Give Hope

January 26, 2017

By collaborating with Bondo, Kenya for this project, we are giving hope to so many men, women, and children in the Bondo community. After the first group of students travelled to Bondo, it became clear that this project isn’t a want for the community, it is a need.  So many community members have been forced to travel hours to get water for the families. Thanks to you, they will soon have access to clean and sustainable water!

The students on the project team have been working out the final details for the rainwater catchment system and finalizing the drilling of the deep water well. One of the most exciting advancements on the project is constructing the design plan for the rainwater catchment system. The students have designed a gutter system and splash guard that will be attached to the roof of the community’s church that will hopefully catch the majority of the rain. The students will soon be constructing this system on a smaller scale since we have never constructed anything like this before. After the construction the students will run different simulations to ensure that the system stays together in a intense rain or high winds. We are getting close to making this dream a reality!

Thank you for your support! Please continue to share our story with friends and family!

We Are Getting Close!

January 18, 2017

We have been making great progress towards our fundraising goal but still have a long way to go before we can send our students to Bondo, Kenya! We are starting to decide who is going to be able to travel to Bondo as we finalize all of the documentation and planning.

Students who are able to travel to Bondo get the amazing opportunity to experience the culture and apply their engineering skills.They will learn firsthand how the community functions by cooking, collecting water, and attending community events and church with them. A EWB-Hope alum shared just how eye opening this experience was for him;

“I recognized the ways that applying the classroom’s theories could directly impact a community’s quality of life. The experience of putting my skills to work in “the real world” showed me that successful science involves personal relationships, trust, communication, and a healthy dose of patience. . . . [M]y time at Hope, both domestically and abroad, has ensured that I will never lose sight of the very human aspect of my profession, no matter how technical my work may be.”

-Joel Blok (’10, Mechanical Engineering)

Your donation allows students just like Joel to learn how to open their hearts to those in need by using their skills to help others. Thank you again for your support, we couldn’t do any of this without you!

Take a Look at Our Progress!

January 11, 2017

Our Engineers Without Borders Team has been hard at work finalizing all of the details for the rainwater catchment system as well as the groundwater well! To show exactly what we have been working on I have included some drawings that our students have completed for the pad around the groundwater well and the the proposed rainwater catchment system for the community’s church. We are really excited to finalize these plans and are in the process of creating a splash guard prototype to test the equipment that we will be using for the rainwater catchment systems.

We really appreciate all of the support and encouragement that we have been receiving as we work towards bringing clean water to Bondo! Without your support we wouldn’t have the chance to put our engineering skills to good use! Please continue to spread the word about our project as we begin to finalize the details for our implementation trip this summer.

Want an Engineers Without Borders Keychain?

January 04, 2017

We are busy making your perks! Fundraising chair Laura Walker and her father have been busy making the keychains that were designed by her and her peers. A design change has been made so that the keychains preserve as much detail as possible. We have opted to have an engraved keychain using a CNC rather than the metal burn out keychain. Thank you to Grand Rapids Machine Repair and Ray Walker for providing us with the necessary tools and equipment!

If you or a family member would like one, please select the EWB Keychain as your perk when you make a donation! Thank you again to all who have donated so far! Please continue to spread the word about the community’s need for clean water!

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays from the Engineers Without Borders Team!

December 21, 2016

Happy holidays from the Engineers Without Borders Chapter at Hope College! We wanted to take a moment to thank you for the support you have provided for our project! We appreciate you taking the time to help us improve the lives of the community of Bondo!

If you would like to continue to help us accomplish our goals for this year, please share our donation page with your friends and family!

We are off to a great start!

December 13, 2016

The Hope College Engineers Without Borders chapter (EWB-Hope) is committed to a five year partnership with the community of Bondo, Kenya in order to provide a sustainable, clean, and safe water source to its people. The community currently does not have access to clean water within its boundaries and women and children typically walk 1-2 hours every day to meet their water needs.

The team is currently in the Implementation Phase and is working hard to determine the best solution for the people of Bondo. We have recently received our hydrogeological survey results from our contact in Kenya. We were informed that we don’t have too many options for the location of the well as the land around the community doesn’t have access to much water, but there are a couple spots where a water producing well could possibly be drilled! We will continue to do more research to ensure we pick the best solution for the community!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated so far and who has spread the word about our project! If you would like to continue to help us accomplish our goals for this year, please share our donation page with your friends and family!
